Abstract

This research focused on making lubricating grease from the epoxidation of biodiesel obtained from the Jatropha Curcas L plant. Oil previously produced from pine nut seeds was used as raw material; Consequently, consecutive esterification, transesterification and epoxidation experiments were carried out on the fatty methyl esters of the vegetable oil. Regarding the characterization, tests were carried out in triplicate following standardized ASTM norms. In addition, the physicochemical properties of the products obtained as oil, biodiesel and lubricant were analyzed. The overall yield of the process was 71.57%. Regarding the quality parameters, ideal values were found for the oil such as iodine, viscosity, humidity, among other properties that complied with the regulations. After the transesterification process, physicochemical tests were carried out on the biodiesel, complying with the regulations required according to the ASTM 6751 specification. However, the humidity of the biodiesel 0.052% was slightly higher than the regulations; it is estimated that due to washing conditions. The acidity was also very close to the maximum allowed by the norm; so it is inferred that there were H2SO4 remains in the process. For its part, for the categorization of the epoxidized product, API grades and ISO standards were used for the classification of the lubricant. The final density of the lubricant 947.064 Kg/m3 allowed it to be classified as a heavy type lubricant according to the relationship with API gravity. Subsequently, the kinematic viscosity measured at 40 °C of 63,381 mm2/s allowed it to be categorized as ISO VG 68, which is commercially known as a hydraulic wear lubricant.
